About

My name is Joanna Mittal and I am the founder of Jo Studios.

My background is in fashion and over the years I've worked in a variety of areas within the industry including custom menswear, lingerie, and french luxury. The connections and growth that took place in each of these seasons have been integral to the development of my practice today.

Jo Studios came to be during the pandemic as an entity to endorse slow fashion on a more localised scale. This is a design studio that provides consulting and technical garment development - based on the rhythms of the brand.

It has been both a joy and an encouragement to work with local designers who build sustainable and ethical production practices into their brands.

To inquire or view a private collection of my recent client work, please email jo@jostudios.ca.

Moon Man

My BA graduate collection titled, Moon Man, is a unisex capsule that draws inspiration from the human fascination surrounding the moon through history. Across cultures, layers of significance have been attached to the moon from lunar deities to cultural practises based in ancient folklore.

Aspects of my understanding is blended with varied perspectives to further study how we, as created people, have attached characteristics of creator-like influence to the moon. Moon Man uses the garments to construct a nostalgic narrative alluding to the age old romance between the moon and mankind.

Intention

Jo Studios was created to design and produce with responsible intention. This is observed through the following models:

Reducing carbon emissions: Working with brands based in the Greater Toronto Area limits extensive carbon emissions from lengthy overseas transportation of materials.

Repurposing: Larger material off cuts are set aside to make smaller accessories whenever possible.

Investing locally: Working with local brands fosters the growth and development of the Canadian fashion industry.

All designs developed and handmade in downtown Toronto - with care.
